Creating Classes in Studywiz 5:16 5/13/09 Professional Development
Barbara Greenstone gives a tutorial on how to set up classes in Studywiz. This was very cool. I learn a lot from tutorials. I hope the MLTI staff puts out more, and I like the idea of students putting them out as well.

The Colbert Report is a spin off of Comedy Central's The Daily Show. I always miss the show, so this is a great way to catch up on what I've missed. I love this GUY!!!

Teaching With Tunes: 21 Ideas for Incorporating Music Throughout the Curriculum.
I thought these ideas were great. The one thing my students like to do the most is listen to music. They use their iPods, iTunes and search the Internet for music videos. When we made iMovies, I told them that they could bring in their iPods to add music to their movie. We had problems with that. Our Macs did not recognize the iPod, or the music that was on it. Maybe you know some tricks? Our technician thought it was because they set up the iPod to work on a PC. I think I'd like to try using the Foreign Language idea in this artical. Next year the students will have cameras in their Macbooks. Students can create music videos right on the spot. Maybe they could create the music in Garage Band and then sing to it. Humor encouraged!

Assignment #5

  • Watch 21st Century School
  • Answer the following on the wiki page
    • What experiences in school really engage your students?
    • I'd have to say creating things. Whether the student is building something with their hands or with a computer, the students seem very engaged when they are creating something. That's what I love about the Allied Arts classes. The students seem to enjoy Phys. Ed., Art, Music, Shop Class, Computer Class and Science Class. I think they like these subjects because they can create something unique that comes from them. I believe human beings are born to be creators.

    • Do what ways do your students use technology in school as opposed to outside of school?
    • Students in my school use technology in school to complete school work. Although students use technology outside of school to complete school work, they also use technology to play games, watch videos, text and talk to friends which are activities that are not generally not allowed in school. I can see that students have two lives, life one is in school, and life two is at home. If you ask students which life is most engaging they will tell you the second life is. As a teacher, I am looking to bring second life engagement/activities into their first life (school).

    • What was one take away from this video?
    • The big idea I took away from this video is that "attending" a physical classroom could be a thing of the past. As long as everyone has a tool that lets everyone interact with one another, why do you need to attend in the same room? One of my goals is to phase myself out of the classroom. I would like to teach from home, maybe via Skype or some technology like this that is coming in the future. Or maybe a program that runs a "virtual classroom". Think how much money we would save on building costs!!!!
    • I think we're becoming aliens.......

One take away was when he answered my question "How do you deal with the fears of adults when using social networking sites?" Making the project small and successful, so admin/parents will warm up to the ideas. This is where I'm going to start with my project.
The other was to have after school tech. activities. If we are not using school time to work on these projects, I think admin. would be less opposed to these web 2.0 activities.

Talking Kitty (good for students working solo)

Talking Donkey (Actually, both were talking, but I lost the audio for the kitty, and am unable to edit this clip because the edit button is not working. The kitty asks if the donkey wants a cat treat.) Good for working in groups.

Assignment #11

I went blind. I know the assignment says to write, but how about a podcast? Below is the podcast.

Final Project
Pen Pals via Podcats

First, I have to find a teacher to work with. I’m going to approach Zanny who is a Spanish teacher who already sends penpal letters to a teacher in a Spanish speaking country. She has the kids write their letters digitally, then collects them with a thumb drive. She sends the letters to the teacher in the Spanish speaking school via attachment through E-mail. I don’t know what the teacher in the Spanish speaking country does with the attachments.

Students would be “writing” these letters in Spanish. Zanny would provide the students as to what needs to be included in the letter/podcast.

I would have the students use Audacity to record their podcasts on their macbooks. I would have to make sure they also downloaded libmp3lame, if we can’t use Audacity, then we would use Garage Band to record their voices. I would show Zanny how to set up a wiki page, so we could post the podcasts onto the wiki. When this is done, Zanny could send the wiki link to the teacher in the Spanish speaking country. The students in the Spanish speaking country could hear the podcasts on a computer.

It looks like I'm going to have scrap this idea, because there's no collaborative piece.
